Why Cork?

Cork fabric is a natural, sustainable, ecofriendly product produced from cork oak trees found in forests around the Mediterranean, primarily in Portugal.

The process used to make cork fabric begins with the harvesting of the tree bark every 9 years.  Harvesting, in turn, stimulates the regeneration of the bark and helps the environment because once harvested, the oak tree absorbs higher levels of CO2 from the atmosphere.  Next, the bark is air dried for 6 months, steamed and boiled, then flattened into sheets and attached to a fabric using natural adhesive from the cork.  No toxic waste is produced in the process and no environmental damage is caused by the production of cork fabric.

The result is cork fabric, a soft, flexible and lightweight yet durable alternative to animal leather, which is why cork fabric is often referred to as "vegan leather."  Cork fabric is water resistant, scratch resistant, antimicrobial and lightweight yet has a visually pleasing "rustic" look and texture.  Bags and accessories made from cork fabric retain their shape and will withstand daily use.
